Flanders, 1914. The war is audibly approaching. Nelly volunteers as a nurse in a war hospital. She sees this war as an opportunity to become more than just a wife and a mother. Simon preferably wants to stay as far away as possible from the war, but he is pushed by his father who is fascinated by heroism and martial arts. Nelly and Simon end up in the ruthless atrocities of war. And in the midst of this violence there are things which hardly ever change, because everyone keeps eating bread.
